THE Federal Government will start distributing some of its Budget largesse today as seniors and carers begin receiving payments of up to $1000.

The one-off, non-taxable payments will be handed out to about two million Australians in the next 10 days at a cost of about $1.7 billion to the Commonwealth.

More than two million elderly Australians and carers will receive the payments, which were just some of the numerous pre-election sweeteners delivered in the May budget.

An extra $1000 will be paid to recipients of the carers' payment, Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) carer service pension and carer allowance recipients who also receive the wife pension or the DVA partner service pension.

Recipients of the carers' allowance will be paid $600 for each eligible person in their care.

And $500 will go to seniors receiving the utilities allowance and those eligible for the senior concessions allowance.
